HOKA Clifton 11 vs Clifton PRO Running Shoes: A Detailed Comparison

Quick View

A pair of everyday running shoes needs to check more than one box: cushioned enough for comfort on long distances, light enough to keep every stride agile, and versatile enough for frequent use. These are also the qualities behind the appeal of the HOKA Clifton line. Now, with the arrival of Clifton PRO alongside Clifton 11, HOKA offers two options built around different priorities. So what sets the two versions apart, and which one should you choose? Let's find out together with Supersports.

HOKA Clifton – HOKA's Most Beloved Running Shoe Line

HOKA Clifton has been one of HOKA's best-selling running shoe lines for over 10 years, known for its lightweight feel, plush cushioning, and reliable support for everyday runs. Clifton 11 carries these strengths forward with an upgraded upper and sockliner. Clifton PRO, meanwhile, is an entirely new addition to the Clifton family, built for runs that call for a springier, more responsive feel underfoot, while still keeping the signature comfort this shoe line is known for.

The Difference Between Clifton 11 And Clifton PRO

Midsole: Cushioned CMEVA vs Responsive PROGLIDE+

Clifton 11 uses the CMEVA midsole, the familiar material of the Clifton line, delivering a lightweight, cushioned, and stable ride mile after mile. This type of cushioning suits easy runs, recovery runs, or all-day wear without foot fatigue.

Clifton PRO uses PROGLIDE+ cushioning with supercritical foam, paired with the MetaRocker™ design – HOKA's signature curved sole structure that lets the foot roll naturally from heel to toe, rather than moving in a broken, choppy motion.

As a result, every stride feels smoother, with less energy lost during transitions. Combined with the responsiveness of PROGLIDE+, Clifton PRO delivers the familiar cushioned feel of the Clifton line while also giving a noticeably stronger push-off when picking up the pace, making it well suited for tempo runs or pace surges during longer runs.

Outsole: Durability Is Clifton PRO's Strong Point

This is the most noticeable difference between the two pairs. Clifton 11 has rubber coverage only at the toe and along both sides of the heel, leaving the midfoot area with exposed foam, the familiar approach carried across many generations of the Clifton line. Clifton PRO, on the other hand, features block-pattern Durabrasion and Super Abrasion rubber covering nearly the entire length of the outsole, including the midfoot.

As a result, Clifton PRO's outsole offers greater durability, helping prevent the foam from wearing down quickly over time.

Clifton 11 offers cushioned, stable comfort for easy runs, while Clifton PRO delivers better responsiveness thanks to PROGLIDE+ and greater durability thanks to a thicker rubber outsole coverage.

Upper And Shoe Fit

Both pairs feature a breathable knit mesh upper, but Clifton PRO adds a comfort collar and a gusseted tongue for a snugger fit during fast-paced runs. In terms of fit, Clifton 11 offers more size options, including both Wide and X-Wide, while Clifton PRO is only available in Wide, suited to a more snug-fitting foot shape.

Weight

Although designed to be more agile and performance-oriented, Clifton PRO keeps a weight fairly close to that of Clifton 11. At the same size, Clifton PRO is only 14g heavier in the men's version and 6g heavier in the women's version. So the weight difference between the two pairs is barely a factor worth weighing in your decision.

Both use a breathable mesh upper, but Clifton PRO adds a comfort collar and gusseted tongue for a snugger fit, while Clifton 11 offers more size options (Wide, X-Wide) and is slightly lighter due to less rubber coverage on the outsole.

Who Is Clifton 11 Best For? Who Should Choose Clifton PRO?

Clifton 11 is best suited for those who prioritize comfort in every stride. The shoe delivers a cushioned, smooth feel with enough protection for easy runs or recovery runs. Thanks to its lightweight CMEVA midsole and strong shock absorption, Clifton 11 also helps reduce foot fatigue during long runs or when you need a shoe for frequent, everyday use.
